I have these conversations every single week. Same questions. Different families.
Whether they are relocating from Manhattan, Brooklyn, or across the country, families moving to Connecticut are trying to solve the same puzzle. They want to know what life actually looks like once the moving boxes are unpacked.
If you are planning a move, here are the 5 questions I get every time—and what I actually tell them.
1. What town should we live in?
This is usually the first question people ask, but it is actually the wrong first question.
You don’t pick all of Fairfield County. You pick a life.
Westport is not Stamford. New Canaan is not Bridgeport. Wilton is not Greenwich. Every town has a completely distinct personality, pace, and rhythm.
When families ask me this, I tell them: Tell me what your week actually looks like, and I’ll tell you the town. Do you need a seamless Metro-North train commute? Are you looking for historic New England charm, immediate coastal access, or top-tier public school systems? Start by defining your lifestyle, and the right town will reveal itself.
2. How bad are taxes and the cost of living?
Let’s be honest—taxes and cost of living are a reality check for anyone moving into the area. Between local mill rates, state income taxes, and everyday expenses, your monthly budget will look different.
The good news? By year two, most families have adjusted.
What usually catches people off guard isn't the tax rate itself; it’s realizing how much of their old life was spent compromising on school quality, square footage, safety, or community just to save a buck. Once they arrive, they finally see what they are getting in return.
3. What does our money actually get us here?
The answer depends entirely on where you are moving from.
Clients moving out of NYC look at the Fairfield County market and see incredible value, breathing room, and square footage they could never afford in the city.
Clients coming from lower-cost states often experience sticker shock, seeing the local market as a significant step up in price.
Ultimately, your purchasing power comes down to prioritizing what matters most to your household—whether that's a sprawling lot, a historic home, or walkability to a vibrant downtown.
4. What about the kids?
Secretly, this is the question that drives the whole decision. Parents worry endlessly about how their children will handle a major relocation.
Here is what I always tell them: Your kids will adapt faster than you will.
Before you know it, they’ll be riding bikes to the town green, walking to local ice cream spots, and joining community youth sports. Six months in, you’ll realize you didn’t just buy them a better house—you gave them an entirely different, more connected childhood.
5. Will we actually like it?
The fear of regret is real. Leaving a familiar routine, a job network, or a longtime neighborhood is daunting.
My honest answer? In all my years helping families relocate to Fairfield County, I haven’t met a single person who wishes they had stayed stuck in their old routine. What I have met are dozens of clients who look back and say they wish they had made the leap sooner.
That is the part nobody tells you. The logistical questions you are asking right now aren't the real ones holding you back. The real question is the one you keep avoiding: What are you waiting for?
