Everything You Need to Know About Norwalk’s Harbor Loop Trail Extension

If you spend time walking, running, or cycling around Norwalk, you are likely familiar with the Harbor Loop Trail.

As an integral part of the larger Norwalk River Valley Trail (NRVT) network, this five-mile loop connects key areas of the city—including East Norwalk, South Norwalk (SoNo), and Wall Street. It offers residents a fantastic way to enjoy local green spaces, scenic waterfronts, and active transportation.

However, anyone who has tried to complete the full loop knows it comes with a few frustrating hurdles. Because the trail was built in phases over time, several sections remain disconnected, forcing walkers off the path and onto city streets. Furthermore, large stretches are currently not ADA-compliant.

Now, a major new proposal aims to fix one of the most glaring missing links.

Closing the Gap Near East Avenue

One of the most disruptive breaks in the current route occurs near East Avenue. Walkers following the boardwalk from the north suddenly find the path ending abruptly, forcing them off-road and around a private office park before they can reconnect to the trail system.

To solve this, a proposed project features an approximately 950-foot elevated boardwalk along the Norwalk River. This new section would directly connect existing boardwalk segments to the north and south, effectively closing the gap and adding roughly seven-tenths of a mile of continuous, off-road trail right along the water.

Not only would this extension vastly improve the user experience, but it would also enhance accessibility and safety for pedestrians and cyclists navigating Norwalk's urban core.

Key Project Milestones & Timeline

Major infrastructure and community projects move forward through local municipal review boards, and this trail extension is no exception:

  • July 22: The proposal went before the Harbor Management Commission, where commissioners reviewed the coastal site plan referral and preliminary design elements.

  • August 19: The project moves forward to the Planning and Zoning Commission for further review and public engagement.

Why It Matters for Norwalk

The expansion of continuous greenways and multi-use trails is vital for the continued growth and vibrancy of Norwalk. Initiatives like the Harbor Loop Trail extension do more than just offer a scenic spot for a weekend stroll:

  • Connectivity: They safely link vibrant neighborhoods like SoNo and East Norwalk without requiring a car.

  • Accessibility: Pushing toward complete, ADA-compliant infrastructure ensures everyone in the community can enjoy the waterfront.

  • Quality of Life: Expanding off-road public recreation areas directly supports the health, walkability, and overall appeal of our local neighborhoods.
