On a gray and icy coastal morning, when Long Island Sound felt colder than the thermometer admitted, I found myself standing at the entrance of Manresa Island. Behind me stood the former power plant, a towering structure that some call an eyesore and others see as a reminder of Norwalk’s industrial roots. No matter how you feel about it, the building remains one of the most iconic silhouettes on our waterfront.
Despite the snow and the biting wind, the Manresa team welcomed us warmly. We climbed into a small golf cart and started our tour of the property. The island’s 144 acres stretched out around us, quiet and full of potential. Even in the cold, you could feel that the land is ready for its next chapter.
Throughout the tour we were shown artifacts uncovered on the grounds. Rusted tools, worn signs, and metal fragments told the story of the workers who once kept the plant running. These pieces of history reminded us that the site was once a vital part of the region’s power infrastructure.
We began the long climb through the interior of the plant. Staircase after staircase took us past old boilers and towering steel frameworks. The deeper we went, the more the building felt alive with memories of the past. Finally we reached the roof, where the wind whipped around us and the view opened over the entire city.
Standing at the top, Norwalk looked different. Not as it is today, but as it could be. There is a real opportunity for this property to become something meaningful for the community. Residents imagine everything from public spaces and waterfront trails to creative hubs and recreational areas. Redevelopment will not just change the skyline. It has the potential to reconnect people to the shoreline and bring new energy to this part of town.
The structure was built to last and now it has the chance to be transformed rather than forgotten. What once powered the region may soon power imagination, economic growth, and community connection.
Manresa Island is entering a new era. As redevelopment moves forward, the story is still being written, and many of us are excited to see what comes next for one of Norwalk’s most unique and historic sites.
